L'Alpe d'Huez is one of the most prestigious ski resorts in the French Alps, but it is also a world cycling mecca thanks to its legendary climb with 21 numbered hairpin bends, each bearing the name of a Tour de France stage winner. Perched at 1,860 metres above Bourg-d'Oisans, the resort offers an exceptional ski area of 250 km of runs between 1,120 and 3,330 metres, culminating at the Pic Blanc accessible by cable car. The Sarenne glacier allows summer skiing, and the Sarenne black run (16 km) is the longest black run in Europe. In summer, Alpe d'Huez becomes a playground for cyclists from around the world who come to tackle the 21 bends (13.8 km, 1,071 m elevation gain), hikers exploring mountain lakes (Lac Besson, Lac Noir) and mountain bikers on the Megavalanche bike park. A taxi from Grenoble is the most comfortable way to reach the resort, especially in winter when the 21-bend climb can be tricky with ice.
Route
Route Grenoble → L'Alpe d'Huez
From Grenoble, your driver takes the A480 heading south, following the Drac river, then joins the D1091 (former Route Napoléon) into the Romanche valley. This deep valley, dominated by the Belledonne cliffs on one side and the Taillefer on the other, offers spectacular alpine scenery. You pass through Vizille, Séchilienne and the impressive Romanche gorges carved into rock. After Livet-et-Gavet, the valley opens onto the Bourg-d'Oisans basin, a vast alluvial plain surrounded by peaks over 3,000 m. At Bourg-d'Oisans, you leave the D1091 for the D211 which immediately begins the legendary 21-switchback climb. Each bend is numbered in descending order (21 at the bottom, 1 at the top) and bears the name of a Tour de France winner — Pantani, Hinault, Coppi, Fausto. The road climbs from 720 m to 1,860 m over 13.8 km with an average gradient of 8.1%. Your driver drops you at the resort centre or directly at your accommodation.

Specific tips for the Grenoble → L'Alpe d'Huez route
In winter, the 21-bend climb is regularly cleared but can be icy in the morning — our driver is equipped with winter tyres and chains. The Alpe d'Huez ski area is one of the sunniest in the Alps (300 days of sunshine per year), hence its nickname 'Island in the Sun'. A day ski pass costs about €55 in high season. Don't miss the Sarenne run (16 km, Europe's longest black run) if you're a strong skier. In summer, cycling the 21 bends is a cycling pilgrimage — you can have your luggage transported by taxi while you ride. The Pic Blanc (3,330 m) offers exceptional views of the Écrins, Mont Blanc and the Vanoise massif. Bourg-d'Oisans at the foot of the climb is an excellent supply point with shops and its Saturday market.
