Orcival is a small village nestled in a verdant valley of the Auvergne Volcanoes Park, world-famous for its Notre-Dame d'Orcival basilica, a 12th-century masterpiece of Auvergnat Romanesque art. The building, constructed in grey Volvic andesite, strikes visitors with the perfection of its proportions and the harmony of its tiered chevet — considered by art historians as one of the finest in all French Romanesque architecture. The interior, bathed in subdued light filtering through narrow Romanesque windows, houses Orcival's most precious treasure: the Virgin in Majesty, a 12th-century statue covered in silver leaf and adorned with semi-precious stones, enthroned in the choir for nearly nine centuries. This Romanesque Virgin, one of the five Black Virgins of Auvergne, is an object of devotion attracting pilgrims from across Christendom, particularly during the Feast of the Ascension when a centuries-old procession ascends from the village to the basilica. Tradition holds that freed prisoners would come to deposit their chains as ex-votos, hence the irons that can still be seen hanging in the choir. The 12th-century carved capitals illustrate biblical scenes and plant motifs with remarkable finesse, and the crypts preserve relics and traces of the original building. Beyond the basilica, Orcival holds other heritage and natural treasures. One kilometre from the village, the Château de Cordès, a 15th-century seigneurial residence listed as a Historic Monument, surprises visitors with its French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, the celebrated gardener of Versailles. These terraced gardens, with their box broderies, fountains and geometric perspectives opening onto the Monts Dore panorama, are classified as Jardins Remarquables and constitute one of the rare examples of Le Nôtre's landscape art in Auvergne. The château interior, furnished and decorated in Grand Siècle style, is open for visits from May to September. Lac de Servières, 10 minutes by taxi from Orcival, is a 15-hectare crater lake set at 1,200 metres altitude in a frame of spruce and fir forests. Formed in a volcanic maar hundreds of thousands of years ago, this lake with its dark, deep waters exudes a mysterious and contemplative atmosphere. Swimming is forbidden to preserve the purity of its waters, but a waymarked trail circles the lake in 45 minutes, offering remarkable viewpoints over the still waters and surrounding peaks. The village of Orcival itself deserves exploration: its volcanic stone houses with lauze slate roofs, its artisan Saint-Nectaire cheese dairy (tasting and direct sales), its terraced kitchen gardens and fountains compose an authentic picture of rural Auvergne life. The journey from Clermont-Ferrand crosses preserved forest landscapes, offering a gentle transition between city and volcanic mountain.
