Chambon-sur-Lac is a nature village par excellence, nestled on the shores of Lac Chambon, a 60-hectare volcanic lake at 877 metres altitude at the foot of the Sancy massif. The geological history of this lake is fascinating: around 8,500 years ago, the eruption of the small Tartaret volcano sent a lava flow that blocked the Couze Chambon valley, creating a natural dam behind which waters accumulated to form this peaceful lake with its ever-changing reflections. This volcanic origin gives the site unique geology, with dark sandy beaches mixed with basalt fragments and shores carved into secret coves well known to experienced walkers. Today the lake offers managed beaches with imported sand, lifeguard-supervised swimming in season, and a range of water sports in an incomparable natural setting: kayaking, pedalos, stand-up paddling and fishing are all ways to enjoy these calm waters dominated by the Sancy peaks. The area's crowning glory is undoubtedly the Chaudefour Valley national nature reserve, one of France's most remarkable natural sites. Created in 1991 to protect a glacial cirque of striking beauty, this 820-hectare reserve harbours phonolite and trachyte cliffs towering 300 metres high, spectacular waterfalls — including the Pérouse and Saut de la Bique cascades — and exceptional biodiversity. Over 1,200 plant species have been recorded, including endemic species such as the Auvergne jasione and mountain arnica. On the fauna side, the Corsican mouflon reintroduced in the 1980s is now well established on the ridges, alongside chamois, peregrine falcons nesting in the cliffs, and stoats that can be spotted in winter in their white livery. The reserve's interpretive trail, waymarked and explained by educational panels, is accessible to all and allows visitors to discover the valley's main points of interest in about 2 hours 30 minutes. For experienced hikers, the ascent of the Puy de Sancy (1,886 m, highest point of the Massif Central) via the east face through the Chaudefour valley is considered one of France's finest mountain routes: 4 hours return, 1,000 metres elevation gain, with spectacular passages along the crests of the Dent de la Rancune and Roc de Cuzeau. The village of Chambon-sur-Lac offers a peaceful and authentic atmosphere, far from the bustle of large resorts. Its waterside campsites, rural gîtes in volcanic stone and restaurants serving truffade and aligot on terraces with lake views make it an ideal destination for nature lovers. The lake circuit trail (5 km, 1h30, easy) is an essential family walk revealing new viewpoints of the waters and surrounding volcanoes at every turn.
