Châtenay-Malabry is a commune of 34,000 inhabitants with exceptional literary and botanical heritage. The Maison de Chateaubriand, nestled in the Vallée-aux-Loups estate, was the residence of writer François-René de Chateaubriand from 1807 to 1818, during which he penned part of Mémoires d'outre-tombe, a masterpiece of French literature. The classified historic house welcomes visitors year-round in a romantic 14-hectare park planted with rare species by Chateaubriand himself. The adjacent Arboretum de la Vallée-aux-Loups, a botanical jewel, gathers over 500 tree and shrub species across 12.7 hectares — one of Europe's richest dendrological collections, featuring century-old sequoias, Lebanese cedars and ginkgo bilobas. The commune hosted the École Centrale Paris engineering school campus until 2017. The 4 km Coulée verte greenway crosses Châtenay from north to south.
