Falaise is a small town steeped in history, world-famous as the birthplace of William the Conqueror around 1027-1028. The castle of the Dukes of Normandy, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the town, is one of France's most impressive fortresses. It features three successive keeps (William's square keep, the round 13th-century Talbot Tower and the small keep) linked by fortified walls. Since 2019, an innovative digital experience uses tablets and holographic projections to reconstruct medieval life in the castle — particularly popular with children. The town also preserves fine medieval remnants: ramparts, fortified gates, the Church of the Trinity where William's father, Robert the Magnificent, supposedly spotted Arlette, William's mother, washing linen in the river below. Falaise was also the site of the terrible 'Falaise Pocket' in August 1944, the decisive battle that sealed the German defeat in Normandy.
