Honfleur is one of France's most picturesque ports, world-famous for its Vieux Bassin (Old Harbour) with half-timbered houses reflected in the water, painted by generations of artists from Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Barthold Jongkind — the fathers of Impressionism. The Eugène Boudin Museum traces this exceptional artistic history. The Church of Sainte-Catherine, built entirely of wood by naval carpenters in the 15th century (after the Hundred Years' War, when stone was scarce), is unique in France with its double nave and separate bell tower. Honfleur is also a historic departure port: Samuel de Champlain sailed from here in 1608 to found Quebec City. The Pont de Normandie (2,141 m, record cable-stayed span when inaugurated in 1995) offers an impressive architectural spectacle during the estuary crossing.
