Cauterets is a charming Pyrenean resort combining century-old thermal spas, alpine skiing and exceptional hiking. Frequented in the 19th century by Victor Hugo, George Sand and Baudelaire, the resort has preserved its Belle Époque buildings and sulphur-rich thermal baths (the richest in the Pyrenees). The Cauterets-Pont d'Espagne ski area offers 21 runs between 1,850 and 2,350 m — excellent snow thanks to its north-facing aspect. In summer, the Pont d'Espagne site (classified Grand Site de France) is a natural jewel: vertiginous waterfalls, Lac de Gaube facing the Vignemale (3,298 m, highest French Pyrenean summit), and hiking trails into the Pyrenees National Park.
Route
Route Pau → Cauterets
From Pau, the N21 leads to Lourdes (35 min), then the D920 follows the magnificent Gave de Cauterets valley. This mountain road runs alongside the torrent through spectacular wooded gorges. You pass through Pierrefitte-Nestalas then the valley narrows between rock walls before opening onto Cauterets. No tolls. The D920 is well maintained in winter (priority snow clearing) but chains may be needed beyond Cauterets towards Pont d'Espagne. Total journey takes 55 minutes, up to 1h10 in winter or summer weekends.
