The Château de Champs-sur-Marne is a hidden gem of classical French architecture, located just 25 km east of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne department. Built between 1699 and 1707 by architect Pierre Bullet for Charles Renouard de La Touanne, treasurer of the Extraordinaire des Guerres, this château is considered one of the prototypes of the 'maison de plaisance' that would inspire many aristocratic residences in the 18th century, including the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The Marquise de Pompadour stayed here between 1757 and 1759, during which time she had several salons redecorated in the rocaille style. The château subsequently served as the residence of the Count of Valence, aide-de-camp to Napoleon, then became the property of the Cahen d'Anvers family, bankers who had it magnificently restored during the Belle Époque. Bequeathed to the state in 1935, it served as an official residence for visiting heads of state. Managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, the château is open to the public and features remarkable original furniture, carved woodwork, chinoiseries and perfectly preserved salons. The French formal gardens, redesigned in the 18th century, extend over 85 hectares and offer majestic perspectives. Getting to Champs-sur-Marne by taxi from Paris is the most practical solution to enjoy this visit without RER connections.
Route
Route Paris → Château de Champs-sur-Marne
Your TaxiNeo driver picks you up at your Paris address and joins the A4 motorway towards Marne-la-Vallée via Porte de Bercy or Porte de Vincennes. The A4 first crosses the Bois de Vincennes, eastern Paris's green lung, then the towns of Joinville-le-Pont and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés following the meanders of the Marne. After Champigny-sur-Marne, the motorway opens onto the urban landscape of Noisy-le-Grand and the new town of Marne-la-Vallée. The Champs-sur-Marne exit leads directly to the château estate. Your driver drops you at the main entrance on rue de Paris. The journey is entirely toll-free. The alternative route along the Marne via the D934 is more scenic but about 15 minutes longer. For the return, if you wish to combine with a visit to Vincennes château, your driver can take this route through the Bois de Vincennes, offering a stop at the medieval fortress.
