Moret-sur-Loing is one of the most charming medieval towns in the Île-de-France region, nestled on the banks of the Loing river in southern Seine-et-Marne. This small fortified town, which was a royal residence from the 12th century, has preserved exceptional architectural heritage: 12th-century ramparts, two fortified gates (Porte de Samois and Porte de Bourgogne), a 12th-century keep and the Notre-Dame church founded in 1166. It was above all the Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley who made Moret-sur-Loing world-famous. Settling in the town in 1880, he painted over 400 canvases there, capturing the reflections on the Loing, medieval facades and the changing skies of Île-de-France. The Sisley trail, marked with reproductions of his paintings at the very spots where he set up his easel, allows visitors to discover the town through his eyes. The house where Sisley lived and died in 1899, at 19 rue Montmartre, is visible from outside. The Sucre d'Orge Museum, housed in the former hospice, tells the story of this confection invented by Benedictine nuns of Moret in 1638, a speciality still made today. Getting to Moret-sur-Loing by taxi from Paris is the most comfortable solution, as Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons station is 2 km from the historic centre and SNCF connections are infrequent.

Your TaxiNeo driver picks you up at your Paris address and joins the southern ring road then the A6 motorway towards Lyon. The A6 first crosses the southern suburbs of Paris, passing through Évry and Corbeil-Essonnes, before running alongside the magnificent Fontainebleau forest. The descent into the Loing valley offers splendid views of the Gâtinais countryside. Arrival at Moret-sur-Loing is through the Porte de Samois, one of two medieval gates still standing, offering a spectacular entrance to the fortified town. Your driver drops you at Place de Samois, at the foot of the ramparts, steps from the Notre-Dame church and the bridge over the Loing immortalised by Sisley. The return journey can include a detour via Barbizon, the village of pre-Impressionist painters just 15 km away, or via Fontainebleau château. In case of traffic on the A6, an alternative route via the Francilienne (N104) then D607 avoids the usual slowdowns.
