Vence is a medieval town in the Nice hinterland that combines historical heritage and modern art. Its greatest treasure is the Chapel of the Rosary, entirely decorated by Henri Matisse between 1949 and 1951, considered his masterpiece. The walled old town houses the Cathedral of the Nativity of Mary (11th century), the Place du Peyra with its fountain and a maze of flower-lined lanes. Overlooked by the impressive Baous cliffs (peaking at 800 m), Vence is also a paradise for hikers. The town has welcomed many artists: Dufy, Chagall (whose mosaic adorns the cathedral) and D.H. Lawrence lived here.

Specific tips for the Nice → Vence route
The Matisse Chapel is only open on certain days (Tuesday and Thursday 10am-11:30am and 2pm-5:30pm; Sunday morning during mass). Check times before your visit. Vence's market is held at Place du Grand-Jardin on Tuesday and Friday mornings: it's one of the most authentic in the region. If you're a hiker, the driver can drop you at the Baous trailhead (Col de Vence car park). Vence is less touristy than Saint-Paul and offers a more authentic Provençal experience.
