Toulon, prefecture of the Var and France's main naval base, houses the largest naval base in the Mediterranean. Its magnificent harbour, one of the finest in Europe, is dominated by Mont Faron accessible by cable car. The journey from Nice crosses the entire Var coastline, from the red rocks of the Estérel to the hills of the Provençal hinterland. Toulon charms visitors with its Cours Lafayette market, its opera house (France's second largest), the golden sandy beaches of Le Mourillon and its privileged access to the Hyères Islands (Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Le Levant). The city is also the embarkation point for Corsica by ferry.

Route

Route Nice → Toulon

The route follows the A8 (La Provençale) to the Le Muy/Draguignan exit, then the A57 which descends towards Toulon through the central Var hills. The motorway bypasses Brignoles and Le Luc before joining the Gapeau valley. Approaching Toulon, the A57 passes through the Toulon tunnel (free, 1.8 km) which opens directly onto the port. Alternatively, you can leave the A8 earlier at Fréjus and follow the coast via the D559 then A570, but this route is much longer (2h30). The landscape changes dramatically along the way: AOC Côtes-de-Provence vineyards, pine forests and garrigue.

Practical tips

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Nice → Toulon route

Combined A8+A57 tolls amount to about €14. Plan a morning departure to avoid frequent slowdowns at the Toulon tunnel (exit 15a). On summer weekends, the A8 between Fréjus and Le Muy can be saturated: in this case, the driver knows alternative routes via national roads. If you're catching a ferry to Corsica, share your boarding time: the driver will drop you directly at the ferry terminal. Remember a jacket: the mistral often blows over Toulon harbour.

Tolls: ~14 € (sections Nice–Le Muy + A57)
