Sisteron is one of Haute-Provence's most spectacular sites, a fortress town clinging to a dizzying rock above the Durance cluse, the narrow natural passage where the river has carved its way between two mountains. Nicknamed the 'Gateway to Provence' because it marks the climatic and geographic boundary between the northern Alps and Mediterranean Provence, Sisteron impresses with its Citadel, a medieval fortress remodelled by Vauban in the 17th century, dominating the town from a 500-metre rock pinnacle. The Nights of the Citadel festival, featuring music, theatre and open-air dance each summer, uses this grand natural setting as its stage. The Rocher de la Baume, opposite the Citadel, offers an astonishing geological spectacle with its limestone strata folded vertically by tectonic forces, forming a stone organ unique in Europe. The old town of Sisteron, with its 'andrones' (medieval covered alleys), towers and fountains, retains authentic charm. Napoleon, during his return from Elba in March 1815, crossed the Durance at Sisteron, a key episode in his 'Flight of the Eagle' towards Paris. The journey from Nice crosses the entire Southern Alps, ascending the Var valley then traversing Haute-Provence through Digne-les-Bains, offering a voyage into the wildest and most luminous landscapes of the region.
Route
Route Nice → Sisteron
From Nice, take the M6202 along the Var valley northward. The N202 national road passes through Entrevaux and Annot before reaching Digne-les-Bains. From Digne, take the N85 (Route Napoléon) northward then the D951 which follows the Durance on its left bank. You enter Sisteron from the south, with the Citadel suddenly rising before you above the cluse. Alternative: from Digne, the D17 then D3 via Malijai offers a scenic shortcut but on narrow roads. The entire route is toll-free on national and departmental roads. The road is in good condition, winding in the Var valley then more open after Digne in the Bléone and Durance valleys. Our drivers know the various options and choose the best route for the conditions.

Specific tips for the Nice → Sisteron route
The Nights of the Citadel (July-August) is a major cultural event: book tickets and taxi well in advance. The Citadel visit takes about 1h30 and the panoramas from the ramparts are vertiginous — don't miss the view of the Rocher de la Baume and the Durance valley. The Sisteron market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings is famous for its AOC Sisteron lamb, one of France's finest meats. Lunch in an old town restaurant to taste grilled lamb with thyme, the local speciality. The Rocher de la Baume trail offers an easy walk with spectacular views. In winter, the north wind (mistral) can be icy in the cluse: dress warmly. Sisteron is also a starting point for visiting the Méouge gorges and perched villages of the Montagne de Lure.
