Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of France's most famous villages. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Malvan valley, this 16th-century fortified village captivated the greatest artists of the 20th century: Chagall, Matisse, Picasso and Prévert all stayed here. The Fondation Maeght, inaugurated in 1964, is one of Europe's most important modern and contemporary art museums, with works by Miró, Giacometti and Calder in its gardens. The village itself is an open-air gallery, with artist studios, art galleries and the famous Colombe d'Or, a historic inn whose walls are covered with masterpieces given by artists who dined there.
Route
Route Nice → Saint-Paul-de-Vence
From Nice, head west along the Promenade des Anglais then the Cagnes road (M6098). At Cagnes-sur-Mer, take the D36 towards Vence which climbs in hairpin bends through olive-covered hills. Saint-Paul-de-Vence appears on its promontory after 10 minutes of climbing. The village is pedestrianised: the driver drops you at the main car park (Porte de Vence) or at the Fondation Maeght depending on your destination. Alternatively, you can take the A8 motorway to Cagnes-sur-Mer (exit 48) then the D36, slightly faster but less picturesque.
