Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the most prestigious and exclusive peninsulas in the Mediterranean. This small paradise of greenery, planted with pines and palms, is home to some of the most expensive properties in the world, where royals, billionaires and celebrities own sumptuous villas behind high stone walls. The cultural jewel of Cap Ferrat is undoubtedly the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a pink Italian Renaissance-style palace surrounded by nine themed gardens with sea views on both sides of the peninsula. The coastal path circles the entire Cap in about 3 hours, offering exceptional panoramas of crystal-clear coves, the Villefranche-sur-Mer harbour and the Bay of Beaulieu. The marina at Saint-Jean hosts prestigious yachts, and the village retains a peaceful, authentic atmosphere with its seafood restaurants along the waterfront. Somerset Maugham, Charlie Chaplin and King Leopold II of Belgium are among the illustrious residents who have made their home on this enchanting peninsula.

Route

Route Nice → Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

From Nice, take the Lower Corniche (M6098) towards Monaco. The road follows Nice port then the Cap de Nice headland with views of the Villefranche harbour. After Villefranche-sur-Mer, at the Port de la Darse roundabout, turn right onto the D25 which enters the Cap Ferrat peninsula. The road first passes through the village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, then continues to the lighthouse at the tip of the Cap. For the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, follow signs from Boulevard Denis Semeria. The journey is entirely toll-free on well-maintained departmental roads. Alternatively, you can take the Middle Corniche (D6007) and descend to the peninsula via Beaulieu-sur-Mer, but this detour adds 5 minutes with no particular advantage. The driver drops you at the Villa Ephrussi entrance, Saint-Jean port or your hotel on the peninsula.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Nice → Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat route

The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is open year-round but the gardens are most beautiful in spring (April-May). Allow 2 hours for a full visit (villa + 9 gardens). The coastal path is free and accessible all year: allow about 3 hours for the full circuit around the Cap. Wear enclosed shoes as some sections are rocky. In summer, the Cap's coves (Passable beach on the Villefranche side, Paloma beach on the Beaulieu side) are paradise but get crowded: arrive before 10am. Parking is very limited on the peninsula, especially in high season: a taxi eliminates this problem. For lunch, the restaurant at Saint-Jean port serves excellent fish cuisine overlooking the yachts. Easily combine with Villefranche-sur-Mer or Beaulieu-sur-Mer in the same half-day.
