Peillon is arguably the most authentic and best-preserved perched village in the Nice hinterland. Clinging to a rocky spur at 373 metres altitude above the Paillon valley, this medieval village seems frozen in time since the 13th century. Its narrow, steep lanes, vaulted passages, ochre-fronted stone houses and rock-hewn stairways form a vertical labyrinth of striking beauty. Peillon's jewel is the Chapel of the White Penitents, adorned with remarkable frescoes attributed to Giovanni Canavesio (circa 1485) depicting the Passion of Christ, considered among the finest mural paintings in the region. Unlike many perched villages that have been restored and gentrified, Peillon retains a rare authenticity: no tourist shops, no art galleries, just a living village where residents maintain a traditional Mediterranean way of life. The parish church of Sainte-Marie de l'Assomption, crowning the village from its highest point, offers a dizzying panorama over the Paillon valley and surrounding mountains. The journey from Nice crosses the lower Paillon valley before climbing a winding road lined with olive trees to the village.
Route
Route Nice → Peillon
From Nice, take the D2204 towards L'Escarène through the Paillon valley. After about 12 km, turn right onto the D21 which climbs in tight switchbacks through olive groves and holm oaks up to the village of Peillon, perched on its rocky pinnacle. The road is narrow in its final section but well maintained. Parking is below the village as the medieval lanes are inaccessible to cars. The taxi drops you at the village car park, a two-minute walk from the entrance. Our drivers know this winding road well and drive safely even on the tightest bends. The alternative via the A8 motorway exit La Turbie then the D53 is slightly longer but avoids the Paillon valley in case of traffic.

Specific tips for the Nice → Peillon route
Peillon is a village to explore on foot — wear comfortable shoes as the lanes are steep and cobbled. The Chapel of the White Penitents is only open on certain days (usually Mondays): check before your visit so you don't miss the Canavesio frescoes, true 15th-century treasures. The Auberge de la Madone, the village's only restaurant, is an institution for traditional Niçois cuisine: book ahead, especially at weekends. Allow 1h30 to 2 hours to explore the village at your own pace. Combined with Peille (10 km further via the D53), you can make a superb half-day excursion to the perched villages of the hinterland. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when golden light illuminates the stone facades.
