Peille is one of the most secret and best-preserved villages in the Nice hinterland. Perched at 630 m altitude on a rocky spur overlooking the Paillon valley and the coastline, this medieval village offers a 360-degree panorama embracing the Mediterranean Sea, Mont Agel (1,148 m), the pre-Alps and on clear days the Corsican coast. Inhabited since Roman times, Peille was a stronghold of the County of Provence and then the County of Nice during the Middle Ages. Its vaulted lanes, covered passages, stone houses with carved lintels and tiny squares form a labyrinth of charm preserved from mass tourism. The Church of Sainte-Marie-de-l'Assomption (12th-13th century) holds an altarpiece attributed to Jean Canavesio and a painting from the Nice school. The village has kept its living traditions: every September, the Ratapignata festival (the bat, the village's emblem) celebrates local legends with a medieval procession. Peille is also the starting point for beautiful hikes towards Mont Baudon, the Col de la Madone de Peille and the ridges overlooking Monaco.
Route
Route Nice → Peille
From Nice, take the D21 towards La Trinité-d'Agel then climb via the D53 towards Peille through olive groves and garrigue scrubland. The road rises quickly above the Paillon plain, offering progressive views over the Nice coastline. The final kilometres climb in tight hairpin bends up to the village clinging to its rock. The driver drops you at the car park at the village entrance (Place de la Tour). An alternative goes via La Turbie and the Col d'Èze (D2564 then D53), offering views of Monaco on the way. This route is slightly longer (35 min) but allows combining Peille with the Trophy of the Alps at La Turbie.

Specific tips for the Nice → Peille route
Peille is an authentic and untouristy village: that is its strength. Wear good shoes for the steep cobbled lanes. The village can be explored in 1 to 1.5 hours. Ask to see the 'Moulin à huile' (old olive press) and the medieval fortified gate. The village's single restaurant offers family-style Nice cuisine with valley views: book ahead as there are only about fifteen seats. The panorama from the orientation table (above the church) is extraordinary: on clear days, you can see Corsica. For hikers, the trail to Mont Baudon (1,264 m) starts from the village: allow 3 hours return. Ideal to visit in spring or autumn for the colours and mild temperatures.
