Lucéram is a hidden gem of the Nice hinterland, a medieval village perched at 650 metres altitude on a rocky spur overlooking the Paillon valley. Listed among remarkable heritage sites, this village has preserved its intact medieval character with vaulted alleys, covered passages, stone houses with lauze roofs and the remains of its feudal castle. But Lucéram is above all famous throughout Provence for its extraordinary Christmas nativity circuit, one of the largest in southern France. From early December to late January, over 450 nativity scenes are installed in the alleys, cellars, fountains and niches of the village, transforming Lucéram into a true open-air museum of nativity art, from the most traditional to the most contemporary. The Church of Sainte-Marguerite harbours an unexpected treasure for such a small village: an exceptional collection of altarpieces from the Nice Renaissance school, including a major altarpiece attributed to Louis Bréa, the 'Fra Angelico of Nice'. The gilded panels depicting Saint Margaret and local saints are remarkably fine. The landscape around Lucéram is wildly beautiful, between centuries-old olive groves and pine forests, with panoramic views of the snowy Mercantour peaks to the north and the Mediterranean to the south.
Route
Route Nice → Lucéram
From Nice, take the D2204 towards the Col de Nice (direction Sospel/Turin). After the Col de Nice tunnel, continue on the D2566 towards L'Escarène. Pass through L'Escarène, a market town in the Paillon valley, then continue on the D2566 which climbs in hairpin bends to Lucéram. The road is narrow in the final kilometres but well maintained. The village appears suddenly, perched on its rocky spur with its Romanesque bell tower dominating the valley. Parking is very limited in the village: this is one of the great advantages of a taxi, which drops you as close as possible to the medieval village entrance. Our drivers know the access points and rare drop-off spots available.

Specific tips for the Nice → Lucéram route
The Lucéram nativity circuit runs from early December to late January, with a special event on 24 December (torchlight procession and Provençal midnight mass). Visit on weekdays to avoid the December weekend crowds. The Church of Sainte-Marguerite and its altarpieces are worth visiting year-round — ask for the key at the information office if it is closed. The village is small but steep: wear suitable shoes for cobblestones and staircases. Combine the visit with Peillon or Peille, two other magnificent perched villages in the Nice hinterland, accessible by taxi in 20 minutes. The village restaurant serves traditional Niçois cuisine at gentle prices: stockfish, daube and Swiss chard pie.
