La Turbie is a perched village at 480 metres altitude, famous for the Trophy of the Alps, a monumental Roman monument erected in 6 BC by the Roman Senate to celebrate Augustus's victory over the 44 Ligurian tribes of the Alps. This 35-metre-high monument, partially restored, is one of only two surviving Roman trophies in the world. It dramatically overlooks Monaco, offering one of the most photographed views on the Côte d'Azur: the Principality spreads out 480 metres below like an architect's model, with the Rock, Port Hercule and the Fontvieille skyscrapers. The village itself retains an authentic medieval charm with its narrow streets, stone houses and the baroque Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. La Turbie stands on the Via Julia Augusta, the ancient Roman road linking Rome to Gaul. The journey from Nice ideally follows the Grande Corniche, one of three legendary roads carved into the cliffs between Nice and Monaco, offering vertiginous panoramas at every turn. It was on this road that Grace Kelly was driving on the day of her fatal accident in 1982.
Route
Route Nice → La Turbie
The most spectacular route takes the Grande Corniche (D2564), a panoramic road built by Napoleon I along the route of the ancient Via Julia Augusta. From Nice, climb via Boulevard de l'Observatoire then the Route de la Grande Corniche. The road rises quickly above the city, offering sweeping views of Cap Ferrat, the Villefranche harbour and Nice port. After the Col d'Èze (512 m), you see Monaco below and La Turbie appears on your right with the Trophy of the Alps clearly visible at the top. The alternative via the A8 motorway is faster: head towards Italy and take exit 57 La Turbie. You arrive directly in the village via the D2564. The driver drops you at Place Neuve, steps from the Trophy and the heart of the medieval village.
Main route: Grande Corniche (D2564) ou A8 sortie 57 — ~1,50 € (via A8)

Specific tips for the Nice → La Turbie route
The Trophy of the Alps can be visited year-round (closed Monday, entry €6). The adjoining museum traces the history of the Roman conquest of the Alps. Allow 1 hour for the monument and museum, plus 30 minutes to stroll through the village. The view of Monaco is most beautiful in late afternoon when golden light illuminates the Principality. If visiting in summer, the Grande Corniche can be busy with motorcyclists and driving enthusiasts: the driver knows this road by heart. Combine La Turbie with Èze Village (10 minutes by taxi) for a half-day 'perched villages and corniches' tour. Les Santons restaurant on the church square offers refined Provençal cuisine with a panoramic terrace. Parking is limited in the village but a taxi eliminates this problem.
