Taxi Nice — Gattières

Gattières is a little-known but enchanting perched village, clinging to a hillside at 320 metres altitude above the right bank of the Var, offering a striking panorama over the widest valley on the Côte d'Azur and the mountains that border it. Just 15 km from Nice, this medieval town has preserved an authentic village atmosphere, far from the bustle of the nearby coast. The old village is discovered through a maze of steep lanes, stone stairways, vaulted passages and flower-filled small squares that climb to the parish Church of Saint-Nicolas, Romanesque in origin (12th century), altered several times but retaining an austere charm with its characteristic square bell tower. The medieval castle ruins crown the village summit and offer the finest viewpoint over the Var valley, from its confluence with the Estéron to the north to its mouth at Nice to the south, with the Mediterranean as a backdrop. Gattières is surrounded by hills covered with olive trees, holm oaks and fragrant garrigue that delight walkers and hikers. The ridge path above the village offers an easy walk with spectacular views. The village lives to the rhythm of the seasons, with its traditional festivals, Sunday morning market and local olive oil and honey producers. The local artistic community runs workshops and exhibitions throughout the year. The journey from Nice is quick, first following the Var valley before climbing to the village on a winding but well-maintained road.
