Gap, prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes, is France's highest major city at 735 metres altitude. Set in a broad sunny basin at the crossroads of Alpine routes, it is the gateway to the Écrins National Park, Serre-Ponçon lake and the ski resorts of Champsaur and Dévoluy. The town itself offers a pleasant historic centre with its cathedral, Saturday Provençal market and lively terraces. Gap enjoys exceptional sunshine of over 2,600 hours per year, barely less than Nice, earning it the nickname 'Nice of the Alps'. Serre-Ponçon lake, France's largest artificial lake at 28 km long, is a water sports paradise in summer. The Écrins National Park, with its glaciers and peaks exceeding 4,000 metres, offers the finest hikes in the Southern Alps. The journey from Nice crosses the entire Southern Alps, ascending the Var valley then crossing the Alpine foothills via the Route Napoléon or through Digne-les-Bains, for a spectacular voyage through changing landscapes from Mediterranean olive groves to high mountain meadows.

Route Nice → Gap
Two main routes connect Nice to Gap. The most direct takes the M6202 along the Var valley, then the N202 via Entrevaux and Annot to Digne-les-Bains. From Digne, take the N85 (Route Napoléon) northward, crossing the Col Bayard (1,248 m) before descending into Gap. Total: about 195 km. The alternative route via Sisteron takes the N85 from Digne then the A51 motorway from La Saulce, but is no faster. In summer, if the Col de la Cayolle is open, a route via Barcelonnette and the Col de Vars or Ubaye valley is possible but longer and windier.
