Fréjus is a city of exceptional heritage, founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC as Forum Julii. Its Roman amphitheatre, arena and listed episcopal group bear witness to twenty centuries of history. The journey from Nice crosses the spectacular Estérel massif, where red porphyry rocks plunge into the turquoise Mediterranean. Fréjus also offers 10 km of fine sandy beaches and a lively marina at Port-Fréjus. The town is an ideal starting point for exploring the Gulf of Saint-Raphaël, the Verdon Gorges and the Var hinterland.
Route
Route Nice → Fréjus
The route follows the A8 motorway (La Provençale) towards Aix-en-Provence. After leaving Nice, you cross the hills of the Nice hinterland then the Tanneron massif. The motorway then runs alongside the Estérel massif with remarkable views of the red rocks. Take exit 38 Fréjus/Saint-Raphaël. Alternatively, the coastal road (N98) via Cannes, Mandelieu and Théoule-sur-Mer offers a sublime coastal route but considerably extends the journey (2h). The Estérel road via the Corniche d'Or (D559) between Cannes and Fréjus is one of the most beautiful roads in France.
