Digne-les-Bains, prefecture of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a spa town nestled in a sunny valley at the confluence of three rivers. The lavender capital, it hosts the spectacular Corso de la Lavande every August, a floral parade of floats decorated with lavender. The town is also the terminus of the famous Train des Pignes, a historic railway linking Nice to Digne through 150 km of grand Alpine scenery, crossing bridges, tunnels and viaducts built in the early 20th century. The Haute-Provence Geological Nature Reserve, Europe's largest, surrounds the town and harbours giant ammonite fossils and dinosaur footprint slabs 300 million years old. The Digne thermal baths draw on a 50°C hot spring with recognised therapeutic properties for rheumatic and respiratory conditions. The Gassendi Museum, named after the famous philosopher and astronomer born in Digne, combines contemporary art and natural sciences in an original journey. The trip from Nice ascends the spectacular Var valley, one of the region's longest rivers, offering a journey through the Southern Alps from Mediterranean olive groves to Haute-Provence lavender fields.
Route
Route Nice → Digne-les-Bains
From Nice, take the M6202 northward along the Var valley. The road follows the river on its left bank, passing through Plan-du-Var and the Var gorges. After Puget-Théniers, the valley widens and the road becomes the N202. You pass through Entrevaux, a fortress town fortified by Vauban perched above the Var, then the Scaffarels and Annot, a charming village known for its spectacular sandstone formations. After the Col de la Colle Saint-Michel (optional, the N202 bypasses it), you descend into Digne-les-Bains via the D900. The entire route uses national and departmental roads with no tolls. The road is in good condition but winding in places, particularly through the Var gorges. Our drivers know this route perfectly and adapt their driving to mountain road conditions.

Tips & best practices
Specific tips for the Nice → Digne-les-Bains route
The best time to visit Digne is late June to early August, when the lavender fields are in full bloom bathing the countryside in intense blue-purple. If time allows, take the taxi one way and the Train des Pignes the other for an unforgettable experience — the train takes 3h15 but the panoramas are exceptional. The Digne thermal baths offer day packages without a medical prescription. The Geological Reserve can be visited with a guide for the most spectacular sites: book in advance. The Digne market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings offers the finest Haute-Provence products: lavender honey, olive oil and artisan nougat. In winter, the road may be snowy at the pass, but the N202 is well maintained.
