Contes is a picturesque medieval town situated in the heart of the Paillon valley, just 20 km from Nice but in another world — that of the authentic, unspoilt Nice hinterland. Perched at 250 metres altitude on a rocky spur above the Paillon de Contes, the village offers a maze of cobbled lanes, stone stairways, vaulted passages and tall houses with colourful facades typical of the County of Nice. The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, in the village centre, is a jewel of Niçois baroque art with its trompe-l'oeil paintings, gilded stucco and altarpiece of the Rosary. Contes has been a centre of olive cultivation and olive oil production for centuries: the communal oil mill, in operation since the 17th century, continues to press local olives (Cailletier variety) using traditional methods, and can be visited in season (November to February). The surrounding hills are covered with centuries-old chestnut forests that offer a flamboyant spectacle in autumn and produce renowned chestnuts, celebrated during the Chestnut Festival each November. The Genoese bridge spanning the Paillon, the medieval castle ruins and rural chapels punctuate walks around the village. Contes is also the starting point for fine hikes to the neighbouring villages of Châteauneuf-Villevieille (with its feudal ruins offering panoramic views) and Berre-les-Alpes. The journey from Nice through the Paillon valley is quick and pleasant, crossing Nice's eastern outskirts before entering the greenery of the hinterland.
Route
Route Nice → Contes
From Nice, take the D2204 towards L'Escarène through the Paillon valley. The road follows the Paillon through Drap and Cantaron before reaching Contes after about 20 km. The climb to the old village is via a small turning on the left, switchbacking up to the perched village car park. The alternative via the A8 motorway (exit La Trinité) then the D2204 is slightly faster at peak times but makes a detour. The main road is in good condition, straight in the valley floor, and the climb to the village is short but steep. The taxi drops you at the village car park, a two-minute walk from the central square and church.

The ideal season to visit Contes is autumn: the chestnut trees turn flamboyant colours in October-November, and the Chestnut Festival (usually the third Sunday of November) brings the village alive with roasted chestnuts, chestnut cakes and new wine. The olive oil mill can be visited during pressing season (November to February): you can watch the olives being crushed and buy freshly pressed oil, an exceptional product. The baroque church deserves a visit for its trompe-l'oeil decorations. For hikers, the trail from Contes to Châteauneuf-Villevieille (1h30 one way, easy) offers panoramic views over the entire Paillon valley and coast. Village restaurants serve homely Niçois cuisine: pissaladière, Swiss chard pie, stockfish. Contes can be combined with Peillon (10 km) or Lucéram (15 km) for a day discovering the Nice hinterland.
