Châteauneuf-Grasse is a fortified village of rare elegance, perched at 400 metres altitude between Grasse and the coast, offering one of the most extensive panoramas in the Grasse hinterland. This small medieval town, founded in the 12th century around its seigneurial castle, has preserved a remarkable authenticity: its ramparts, fortified gates, cobbled lanes and stone houses form a coherent and preserved architectural ensemble, sheltered from mass tourism. The castle, now privately owned, dominates the village with its imposing silhouette and offers from its surrounds a spectacular panoramic view of the coast, from the red Estérel massif in the west to Cap d'Antibes in the east, with the Lérins Islands glittering offshore. Châteauneuf-Grasse is at the heart of olive country: the surrounding hills are covered with centuries-old olive groves producing an appellation-controlled olive oil considered among the finest in Provence. The village also produces wine and honey, and the perfumers of nearby Grasse still cultivate jasmine and rose fields here. The village atmosphere is that of a timeless Provençal hamlet, with cats dozing on warm stone steps, geranium window boxes and the song of cicadas in summer. The journey from Nice first crosses the coastal landscape before gradually climbing into the fragrant hills of the Grasse country.
Route
Route Nice → Châteauneuf-Grasse
From Nice, take the A8 motorway towards Aix-en-Provence. Exit at junction 44 (Opio/Châteauneuf-de-Grasse). Take the D3 towards Châteauneuf-Grasse. The road winds through hills covered with olive trees and pines before reaching the perched village after about 5 km. Parking is at the village entrance, below the ramparts. The alternative route via the coastal road (D6007 to Cagnes, then D2085 towards Grasse) is longer but avoids the motorway toll. The A8 toll between Nice and exit 44 is about €2. The D3 departmental road is narrow but well maintained, with magnificent valley views.

Specific tips for the Nice → Châteauneuf-Grasse route
The village can be explored on foot in about an hour, strolling through the lanes and enjoying the coastal views from the ramparts. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité, dating from the 12th century, deserves a look for its Romanesque simplicity. The olive groves around the village are particularly beautiful in spring, when wild flowers carpet the ground between the centuries-old trees. To buy local olive oil, enquire at the Opio mill, 3 km away, which offers tours and tastings. Châteauneuf-Grasse combines ideally with Opio (3 km), the village of Mougins (7 km) or Grasse (8 km) for a full day. The village is particularly romantic at sunset, when golden light illuminates the ancient stones and the view stretches over the reddening Mediterranean. A few charming bed-and-breakfasts in the village allow you to stay overnight and enjoy the absolute tranquillity.
