Cagnes-sur-Mer is a town with three faces: Haut-de-Cagnes, a perched medieval village dominated by the 14th-century Château Grimaldi converted into a museum; Cros-de-Cagnes, a fishing quarter with its pebble beach and small harbour; and Cagnes-Ville, a modern centre with the Côte d'Azur racecourse. It was at the Domaine des Collettes that Pierre-Auguste Renoir spent the last twelve years of his life (1907-1919), painting in the Mediterranean light that had captivated him. His studio and house are now a moving museum, set in a garden of century-old olive trees. The Château-Musée Grimaldi houses modern art collections and the Suzy Solidor donation.
Route
Route Nice → Cagnes-sur-Mer
From Nice, two options: the coastal M6098 road (extended Promenade des Anglais) along the sea, or the A8 exit 48. The coastal road is more beautiful but slower in summer. For Haut-de-Cagnes, drive up via Montée de la Bourgade (narrow streets — the driver knows the access routes). For the Renoir Museum, follow signs for 'Domaine des Collettes' from Cagnes-Ville.

Specific tips for the Nice → Cagnes-sur-Mer route
The Renoir Museum is open daily except Tuesdays. The olive garden surrounding the house is as beautiful as the museum itself. Haut-de-Cagnes is a pedestrian village: wear good shoes for the steep cobbled lanes. Château Grimaldi offers a panoramic view from its tower. Cagnes-Ville market (Tuesday to Sunday mornings, Place du Maréchal-Juin) is a good Provençal market. In racing season, the Côte d'Azur racecourse holds very pleasant evening meetings.
