Brignoles is the capital of Green Provence, a region in central Var named for its lush vegetation, contrasting with the aridity of neighbouring Haute-Provence. A former stronghold of the Counts of Provence who kept their summer residence here, Brignoles retains a rich medieval heritage with its comtal palace turned museum, cobbled lanes and mossy fountains. The town is ideally placed for exploring the treasures of the Var hinterland: the Cistercian Abbey of Le Thoronet, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and one of the three Provençal sisters alongside Sénanque and Silvacane, is just 20 minutes away. The Sainte-Baume massif, a sacred mountain where Mary Magdalene is said to have retreated, offers exceptional hikes through an ancient beech forest. The surrounding vineyards produce some of Provence's finest rosé wines, notably under the Côtes de Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence appellations. The journey from Nice crosses the entire Var department from east to west, offering a complete panorama of Provence's landscape diversity.
Route
Route Nice → Brignoles
From Nice, take the A8 motorway (La Provençale) towards Aix-en-Provence. Pass through the Estérel tunnels after Cannes, bypass Fréjus and Draguignan from above, then continue on the A8 across the Var plateau. Take exit 35 Brignoles-Centre which leads directly into town via the D554. The motorway journey is smooth and well-maintained, with views over the wooded hills of upper Var. The alternative via departmental roads (D562 through Draguignan then D557) adds an hour but passes through charming villages like Lorgues, Carcès and Cotignac, known for their Provençal markets and vineyards. This option is recommended if you wish to discover the Var hinterland and time is not an issue.
