Aix-en-Provence is one of southern France's most elegant cities, a place of art and culture where every fountain, every mansion and every centuries-old plane tree tells a story spanning millennia. Former capital of the County of Provence, Aix was shaped by the Romans (founded in 123 BC around thermal springs), the kings of Provence, Good King René in the 15th century, then the parliamentarians of the 17th and 18th centuries who built the sumptuous mansions of the Mazarin quarter. The Cours Mirabeau, a broad tree-lined avenue shaded by giant plane trees and bordered by cafés, bookshops and mossy fountains, is one of France's most beautiful boulevards. Paul Cézanne, Aix's most famous son, tirelessly painted the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, the limestone natural monument dominating the city whose silhouette changes colour from morning to evening. Cézanne's Studio, preserved as he left it at his death in 1906, is a pilgrimage for art lovers. The Aix International Opera Festival every July draws music lovers from around the world to the Archbishop's Theatre. The calisson, an almond paste and candied melon confection, is the city's gourmet emblem. The journey from Nice follows the A8 motorway throughout, crossing Provence from the Riviera to the Aix hills in a 200 km voyage through the landscapes that inspired the greatest painters.

Route

Route Nice → Aix-en-Provence

From Nice, the A8 motorway (La Provençale) takes you directly to Aix-en-Provence without leaving the fast road. The journey passes through the Estérel tunnels, the Var plain, the Draguignan hills, the Green Provence around Brignoles and the Tholonet plateau before reaching Aix. Take exit 31 Aix-en-Provence Centre or exit 30 Aix-East depending on your destination. The A8 is a well-maintained dual carriageway (sometimes three lanes) with regular rest areas. Traffic is generally smooth except approaching Aix on Friday evenings and summer weekends. Our drivers can also use the Aix-South exit to avoid city centre traffic and drop you directly in the Mazarin quarter or at the Cours Mirabeau.

Specific tips for the Nice → Aix-en-Provence route

Aix-en-Provence is a market town: the main market runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at Place Richelme (produce) and Place des Prêcheurs (flea market on Tuesdays). Cézanne's Studio is visited by reservation only in small groups: book online before your visit. The Aix Festival in July requires well-advance booking for performances at the Archbishop's Theatre. To discover the Sainte-Victoire, a hike from Le Tholonet (30 min from Aix) is a must. Calissons are best sampled at Le Roy René or Confiserie Léonard Parli, two century-old institutions. In summer, Aix is hotter than Nice (up to 40°C): visit museums during the hottest hours. The Pavillon de Vendôme and its French gardens are a haven of cool.
