Vitrolles, a town of 37,000 inhabitants in the Bouches-du-Rhône, sits on the edge of the Étang de Berre lagoon, midway between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. The town enjoys a strategic position in immediate proximity to Marseille-Provence Airport (3 km), Aix-en-Provence TGV station (10 km) and the major A7 and A55 motorway routes. Vitrolles possesses rich historical heritage, dominated by the Rocher de Vitrolles, a 204-metre limestone pinnacle crowned by the Saracen tower (11th century), remnant of a former fortress offering exceptional panoramic views over the Étang de Berre, the Étoile mountain chain and the Alpilles. The old village, clinging to the rock's flanks, preserves medieval alleyways, the Notre-Dame-de-Vie chapel and troglodyte houses carved into the limestone. Vitrolles expanded in the 1960s-1970s with the creation of the Priority Urban Zone and the Estroublans business park, which became one of the most important commercial and service centres of the Aix-Marseille metropolis. The Étang de Berre, Europe's second-largest saltwater lagoon (15,500 hectares), borders the town to the west and offers preserved natural areas: the pine forest, salt marshes and coastal paths provide pleasant walks between garrigue and seaside.
