Martigues, nicknamed the Provençal Venice for its picturesque canals lined with colourful houses, is a destination unknown to most international tourists but beloved by Marseillais and Provençaux. The Île quarter, the town's historic heart, offers a unique spectacle with its pastel façades reflected in the calm waters of the Saint-Sébastien canal — the 'Miroir aux Oiseaux' (Bird Mirror) is one of Provence's most photographed and most painted sites, immortalised by Félix Ziem and other Impressionist painters. Martigues is also an authentic Mediterranean fishing port, the most important in the Bouches-du-Rhône after Marseille, famous for its poutargue (bottarga), those dried and pressed mullet roe pouches that constitute a delicacy highly prized by gastronomes. The town is bordered by the Étang de Berre on one side and the Mediterranean on the other, with the wild beaches of the Côte Bleue (Carro, La Couronne) just a few kilometres away. Every summer, free sardinades on the port attract thousands of diners to enjoy wood-fire grilled sardines. A taxi is the most comfortable way to reach Martigues from Marseille, as public transport is limited outside peak hours.

Route

Route Marseille → Martigues

Your driver leaves Marseille via the coastal road heading northwest, taking the A55 motorway from the Rove tunnel, a spectacular structure bored through the Estaque ridge. The A55 follows the Côte Bleue, a succession of calanques and wild coves between l'Estaque and Carry-le-Rouet. On the left you glimpse the turquoise Mediterranean waters and the fishing ports of Niolon and Méjean. The motorway then skirts the southern shore of the Étang de Berre, passing near the Lavéra petrochemical installations (one of the Mediterranean's largest industrial complexes). The Martigues Centre exit leads directly to the town heart and the Île quarter. The A55 is toll-free on this section. The journey takes 35 minutes in free-flowing traffic. During rush hours, especially around 8am Martigues → Marseille (heavy commuting) and evening in reverse, the journey can extend to 55 minutes due to congestion at the Rove tunnel and l'Estaque interchange.

Specific tips for the Marseille → Martigues route

The Marseille — Martigues route follows one of Provence's most beautiful coastal roads. Weather permitting, ask your driver for the Côte Bleue road (D5) instead of the A55: it adds 15 minutes but the panorama over the Niolon, Méjean and Ensuès calanques is breathtaking. For Martigues sardinades (July-August, every Friday evening), arrive before 7pm to get a spot — a taxi is ideal as parking in old Martigues is virtually impossible on these evenings. The Miroir aux Oiseaux is most beautiful in early morning when canal waters are perfectly still. Martigues poutargue can be found at port fishmongers — expect €35-45 per piece for this exceptional product. For beaches, Carro and La Couronne (5 km south) offer fine sand and crystal-clear waters, less crowded than Marseille beaches. In winter, the mistral can blow very strongly over the Étang de Berre — our drivers know the conditions and adapt their speed.
