Carry-le-Rouet is the pearl of the Côte Bleue (Blue Coast), a preserved coastline west of Marseille stretching from L'Estaque to Martigues. This small seaside resort of 6,000 inhabitants is famous throughout Provence for its 'oursinades', popular festivals where fresh sea urchins are enjoyed by the water every Sunday from February to March. Its coves (Calanque du Cap Rousset, Calanque de Fernandel) offer intimate creeks with turquoise waters, far less crowded than Marseille's calanques. Carry's port, lined with fish restaurants, is a charming hub. The Blue Coast Marine Park protects exceptional seabeds, a diver's paradise.

From Marseille, take the A55 towards Martigues/Fos-sur-Mer. Exit at 'L'Estaque / Côte Bleue' and take the D9, a magnificent coastal road winding along the shoreline. You'll pass through Niolon (a tiny fishing port), Ensuès-la-Redonne and Sausset-les-Pins before arriving at Carry-le-Rouet. This cliff road offers spectacular Mediterranean views and Blue Coast creek vistas. Faster alternative: stay on the A55 to the Carry-le-Rouet exit, but you'll miss the panoramas.
