Aubagne is inseparable from Marcel Pagnol, born here in 1895, whose novels and films — My Father's Glory, My Mother's Castle, Manon of the Spring — immortalised the Garlaban hills and garrigue landscapes surrounding the town. It is also the French capital of the santon, those painted clay figurines that populate Provençal Christmas nativity scenes. From July to September, the Aubagne santon fair is the largest event of its kind in Europe, attracting collectors from around the world. Aubagne also houses the headquarters of the French Foreign Legion at the Viénot barracks, with a fascinating museum tracing the history of this elite corps since 1831. The town is a major transport hub for the eastern metropolitan area, with numerous businesses in the Paluds zone and the headquarters of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis. Marseillais come to Aubagne for its Provençal markets, artisanal pottery, and hikes in the Pagnol hills.
