Maubeuge is a fortified town whose ramparts built by Vauban in the 17th century constitute one of the finest bastioned fortification ensembles in northern France. Listed as a historic monument, these fortifications stretch over 3 km along the Sambre river and form a remarkable defensive system with curtain walls, bastions, half-moons and guard houses. The town is the gateway to the Avesnois, the greenest and most hilly natural region in Hauts-de-France, nicknamed the 'Little Switzerland of the North'. The Avesnois is the land of Maroilles, that soft-paste, orange washed-rind cheese with a powerful smell and delicate flavour, made here since the 10th century on traditional farms. Maubeuge Zoo, set within the former Vauban fortifications, is one of the few fortress zoos in Europe and welcomes 300,000 visitors a year. The town is also a historic industrial centre (steelmaking, glasswork) undergoing transformation, with an Italian-style theatre and Art Deco heritage from post-war reconstruction. The Mormal Forest, the largest in Hauts-de-France (9,000 hectares), is 15 km to the south — a paradise for hikers and cyclists.

Route

Route Lille → Maubeuge

Your driver leaves Lille via the A23, a toll-free motorway towards Valenciennes. After Valenciennes (45 km), you take the N2 (national road) leading to Maubeuge through the Sambre Valley. The landscape changes gradually: the Lille plain gives way to the hedgerow-bordered hills of the Avesnois, with pastures lined by hedges, apple orchards (Avesnois cider), red-brick farms and fortified church steeples. You spot the first Bleue du Nord cows that produce Maroilles milk. Arrival in Maubeuge is via the Porte de Mons, a former fortified gate. There are no tolls on this route (A23 and N2 are free). The journey takes 1h05 normally and can reach 1h25 during rush hour through Valenciennes.

Specific tips for the Lille → Maubeuge route

Walking along the Vauban ramparts is free and offers superb views of the Sambre and bastions. Maubeuge Zoo (€13) is set in the moats and bastions — original and pleasant, especially with children. For authentic Maroilles cheese, visit the Maison du Maroilles in the village of Maroilles itself (25 km south, the village that gave its name to the cheese): tasting, cellar visit and direct sales. Flamiche au Maroilles (warm cheese tart) is the Avesnois signature dish — try it in local estaminets. The Mormal Forest deserves a detour: 9,000 hectares of oaks and beeches with waymarked paths. Maubeuge's Italian-style theatre, rebuilt after 1945, is a small architectural gem. For beer lovers, Avesnois craft breweries (Bavaisienne, Épaulette) continue the northern brewing tradition.

Detailed comparison of transport options

The TER Lille — Maubeuge costs €15 and takes 1h to 1h15 with a change at Aulnoye-Aymeries. Frequency is modest (one train every 1-2 hours). By car, the route is entirely toll-free. The TaxiNeo taxi at €120 — €155 provides door-to-door service with no connections and crucially the option to visit the Avesnois (Maroilles, Mormal Forest, fortified villages) en route, which is impossible by train. For 3-4 passengers, the cost (€30-52 per person) is competitive against the train with its change.
