Royan is the major seaside resort of the Côte de Beauté, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Destroyed 85% by Allied bombing in January 1945, the town was entirely rebuilt in a 1950s modernist style that today forms a unique architectural heritage. The Notre-Dame Church, a concrete masterpiece by Guillaume Gillet (1958), the shell-shaped covered market and the seafront are emblematic of this period. Royan offers 5 large fine sand beaches facing the Atlantic: Grande Conche, Saint-Palais, Pontaillac, Chay and Nauzan. La Palmyre Zoo (one of France's most visited) is 15 km away.

Route Bordeaux → Royan
From Bordeaux, take the A10 towards Paris/Saintes. Exit at Saintes then take the N150 towards Royan, crossing the Saintonge and its Cognac vineyards. The approach to Royan offers a view of the Gironde estuary and the Cordouan lighthouse offshore. Alternatively, the D1215 via Blaye and the Royan ferry (20-minute estuary crossing) is longer but spectacular.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Royan route
Royan's beaches are lifeguarded from June to September. Grande Conche is the most family-friendly, Pontaillac the most upmarket. For surfing, head to the Côte Sauvage (warning: dangerous swimming). The central market (every morning in summer) is a 1950s architectural masterpiece. La Palmyre Zoo is 15 km away: ideal with children (allow 3-4h). The Royan–Le Verdon ferry connects to the Médoc without returning to Bordeaux. The Cordouan lighthouse, 'king of lighthouses', can be visited at low tide from Royan (boat excursion).
