The Médoc is a name that resonates worldwide among wine lovers. This peninsula bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Gironde estuary to the east concentrates an extraordinary density of grands crus classés from 1855: Château Margaux, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Léoville Las Cases, and dozens of other estates whose names alone make oenophiles dream. The D2, nicknamed the Route des Châteaux, is one of the world's most beautiful wine roads. It successively crosses the Haut-Médoc, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe appellations, each with its unique terroir, gravel ridges and architectural wineries (including the spectacular cellar designed by Ricardo Bofill at Château Lafite). A taxi is the ideal way to discover the Médoc: no driving concerns after tastings, visits to multiple châteaux in a day, and your driver's local knowledge to recommend open estates and the best restaurants.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Pauillac (Médoc)

Your driver leaves Bordeaux via the northern ring road (A630) heading for the Médoc peninsula. Past Blanquefort and its medieval fortress, you quickly enter the vineyard. The D2 truly begins at Ludon-Médoc and crosses Macau, where the first Haut-Médoc appellation vines appear. At Labarde, you enter the Margaux appellation: Château Margaux (first classified growth) reveals itself on the left, a magnificent neo-Palladian château surrounded by vines. You continue through Cantenac, Arsac and Soussans. After Margaux village, the landscape becomes more undulating with the characteristic gravel ridges of the Médoc. At Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, great growths follow one another: Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Gruaud-Larose. Arrival in Pauillac, the Médoc capital, is along the estuary with views of carrelets (fishing huts on stilts). The entire journey is toll-free. Allow 55 minutes without stops, though the beauty of the route invites pauses.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Pauillac (Médoc) route

The Médoc is best visited from September to November (harvest and autumn colours) or in June (flowering). Most grand châteaux require a reservation for visits and tastings — book at least a week in advance directly with the châteaux. The most accessible without reservation are cooperative cellars (Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe) and certain crus bourgeois. For a full day, we recommend the hourly hire option: your driver takes you to 3-4 châteaux, waits during visits and brings you back at day's end — essential since you will be tasting wine. Le Lion d'Or restaurant in Arcins is an excellent bistrot address, and Café Lavinal in Pauillac (Lynch-Bages group) offers refined cuisine facing the port. The Marathon du Médoc (September) is a unique event: 42 km in costumes with tastings at each château — a taxi is essential for the return!
