Périgueux is the prefecture of the Dordogne and capital of Périgord Blanc. The town is dominated by the extraordinary silhouette of Saint-Front Cathedral, a Romanesque-Byzantine monument listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a stop on the Compostela pilgrimage routes. Its five oriental domes make it a unique building in France, which inspired Paul Abadie for Paris's Sacré-Cœur. Old Périgueux (Puy-Saint-Front quarter) is a maze of medieval streets, Renaissance mansions and shaded squares. The town is also a gastronomic capital: foie gras, Périgord black truffles, walnuts, Périgueux strawberries and porcini mushrooms from the Place Saint-Louis market.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Périgueux

From Bordeaux, take the A89 (L'Arverne) towards Clermont-Ferrand. This recent motorway crosses the Libournais, passes near Saint-Émilion and Libourne, then enters the hills of the Double, a dense forest between Gironde and Dordogne. After Mussidan, you enter the Isle valley. Exit 15 'Périgueux-Centre' puts you 5 minutes from the cathedral. The journey is pleasant and uncrowded outside holiday returns. Rest areas offer fine views of the Périgord countryside.
