Mimizan is an authentic seaside resort on the Landes coast, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the vast pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne. Unlike overcrowded beach resorts, Mimizan has preserved a natural, family-friendly character that appeals to nature and surf lovers. The town is split in two: Mimizan-Bourg, the historic centre inland around the bell-tower porch of the former abbey (UNESCO-listed as part of the Compostela routes), and Mimizan-Plage, the seaside resort facing the ocean with its immense fine sand beaches. The Mimizan current, outlet of Lake Aureilhan, offers a unique spot for paddleboarding and kayaking in calm, sheltered water before flowing into the ocean. The surrounding Landes forest is an extraordinary playground for cycling: the Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1) passes through Mimizan along the coast, and dozens of cycle paths wind through the pine forest between lakes and beaches. Surfing is king in Mimizan: consistent beach breaks attract beginner and experienced surfers alike, with fewer crowds than Hossegor or Lacanau. The Leyre river, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, flows into the Arcachon basin to the north — canoe descents through the gallery forest are an unforgettable experience.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Mimizan
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A63 towards Bayonne. After the Cestas toll, you cross the great Landes pine forest on the motorway. At the Labouheyre exit (after about 50 min), you leave the A63 to take the D44 westward towards the coast. This departmental road crosses 35 km of pure pine forest: a straight corridor under the maritime pine canopy, punctuated by a few clearings and Landes villages (Sabres, home to the Marquèze ecomuseum). Arrival at Mimizan-Bourg is from the east, and Mimizan-Plage is 6 km further west. The journey is pleasant and uncrowded outside July-August Saturdays. Tolls are limited to the A63 Bordeaux-Labouheyre section (~€6).

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Mimizan route
Mimizan is ideal from June to September for swimming and surfing, but also in shoulder season (May, October) for cycling and nature. The north and south beaches of Mimizan-Plage are supervised in summer — the south beach is more family-friendly, the north beach more surf-oriented. The Mimizan current is a unique spot for sunset paddleboarding (rental on site, ~€15/h). The Vélodyssée is superb between Mimizan and Contis (20 km, 1h30 by bike, along the ocean) — bike rental at Mimizan-Plage. The Marquèze ecomuseum at Sabres (30 min drive, also accessible by heritage train from Sabres) recreates 19th-century Landes life (€15, half day). Our drivers recommend La Paillotte restaurant on the beach for a lunch with your feet in the sand. Lake Aureilhan (5 min from Mimizan) is perfect for families: calm water, equipped beach, water sports centre.
