Blaye is a small fortified town on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, dominated by its spectacular citadel built by Vauban between 1685 and 1689 on the orders of Louis XIV. This fortress, part of the 'estuary lock' along with Fort Médoc (left bank) and Fort Pâté (on an islet), has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 within the Vauban fortifications network. The citadel, spanning 38 hectares, is one of France's largest: it contains streets, inhabited houses, a convent, a bakery and even a campsite. The ramparts offer an exceptional panoramic view of the Gironde estuary, several kilometres wide at this point, with the Médoc as a backdrop. Blaye is also the heart of the Côtes de Blaye and Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, a 6,500-hectare vineyard producing fruity, accessible reds often considered the best value in Bordeaux. The Blaye market (Saturday and Wednesday mornings, inside the citadel in summer) is an event not to be missed.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Blaye
From Bordeaux, your driver takes the northern ring road then the A10 towards Paris. After crossing northern Bordeaux's urban area (Carbon-Blanc, Sainte-Eulalie), you exit at the Saint-André-de-Cubzac junction (exit 40a). The D137 then climbs north through the Bourgeais and Blayais vineyard, a landscape of vine-covered hills, white stone villages and small wine châteaux. You pass through Bourg-sur-Gironde (a magnificent perched village with views of the Dordogne and Garonne) before reaching Blaye. The approach to the citadel is striking: Vauban's massive ramparts rise above the estuary. The A10 toll is only about €3. The journey takes 45 minutes normally. The alternative entirely via the D669 (right bank) follows the estuary from Bourg but adds 15 minutes.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Blaye route
The Blaye citadel can be visited freely and for free (24/7 access). For an in-depth guided tour, the tourist office offers themed visits (Vauban, underground passages, daily life) at €6. The panorama from the ramparts is finest at sunset. The Blaye–Lamarque ferry crosses the estuary to the Médoc in 20 minutes (useful for a Blaye morning + Médoc afternoon circuit). The citadel market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings in summer) is picturesque: oysters, Blaye pralines, local wines. To taste Blaye wines, the Maison du Vin de Blaye (citadel square) offers tastings of the entire appellation. The restaurant La Citadelle, within the ramparts, serves local cuisine facing the estuary. Premières Côtes de Blaye are excellent pleasure wines at gentle prices (€5-10 per bottle) — take advantage of the taxi boot to load a few cases.
