Bergerac is a characterful town on the banks of the Dordogne, world-famous for its association with Cyrano de Bergerac (even though the real Cyrano was Parisian!). His statue stands proudly on Place Pélissière, in the heart of old Bergerac with its half-timbered houses. The town is above all the capital of a 12,000-hectare AOC vineyard producing red, rosé, dry white wines and the famous Monbazillac, a sweet wine rivalling Sauternes. The Wine and River Trade Museum traces the history of wine commerce on the Dordogne. The old town, with its Récollets Cloister and medieval lanes, is an architectural gem.
Route
Route Bordeaux → Bergerac
From Bordeaux, take the A89 towards Clermont-Ferrand. After crossing the Entre-deux-Mers and Libournais vineyards, take the Bergerac exit (exit 14). The D936 brings you to the town centre in 10 minutes. The landscape is of Bordeaux then Périgord vineyards: rows of vines as far as the eye can see, wine châteaux and honey-coloured stone villages. Alternatively, the D936 (former national road) via Sainte-Foy-la-Grande is more picturesque but longer (1h30).
