Villefranche-de-Rouergue is one of the most beautiful bastides in southern France. Founded in 1252 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, this medieval Aveyron town is built on a regular grid plan around an arcaded square (Place Notre-Dame) of exceptional architectural harmony. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame, with its massive 58-metre bell tower porch, dominates the town. But Villefranche's treasure is the Saint-Sauveur Charterhouse, a miraculously preserved 15th century monastery, the only complete charterhouse open to the public in France. Its great Gothic cloister, with twisted columns and silent gardens, is a place of absolute serenity. The Black Penitents' Chapel, a 17th century baroque jewel, surprises with the richness of its painted decor — trompe-l'oeil ceiling, gilded altarpiece. Villefranche is also a market town: on Thursday mornings, stalls invade the Place Notre-Dame and adjacent streets in a typically Aveyronnaise atmosphere. Local specialities abound: fouace (brioche flavoured with orange blossom), farcous, tripous, Laguiole cheese, Marcillac wine (neighbouring AOC). The town is the ideal starting point for exploring northern Aveyron: Conques (30 km), Najac (20 km, one of France's most beautiful villages), the Aveyron gorges.

Route

Route Toulouse → Villefranche-de-Rouergue

From Toulouse, your driver takes the A68 towards Albi for about 60 km, then turns north on the D922 towards Cordes-sur-Ciel and Villefranche-de-Rouergue. The road first crosses the Gaillac wine hillsides, a landscape of vines and orchards on clay-limestone hills. After Cordes-sur-Ciel (perched bastide visible on the left), the landscape becomes more wooded and hilly. You gradually enter the Rouergue, land of schist and red sandstone, where isolated farms and stone walls tell of ancestral farming. The descent towards Villefranche-de-Rouergue, in the Aveyron valley, offers a magnificent panorama of the bastide dominated by the collegiate church bell tower. Tolls are limited to the A68 section (approximately €7). The journey takes 1h45 under normal conditions. The D922, a winding but well-maintained departmental road, requires an experienced driver — this is where a taxi really makes sense.

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Villefranche-de-Rouergue route

The Saint-Sauveur Charterhouse is the must-visit: allow 1h30 to wander the great and small cloisters, the monks' cells and gardens. The chapel's acoustics are extraordinary — if you're lucky enough to attend a concert, it's an unforgettable experience. The Place Notre-Dame, the beating heart of the bastide, is lined with shaded terrace cafes: perfect for a coffee or lunch. On Thursday mornings, the market transforms the entire centre into a maze of stalls — arrive early. For a memorable lunch, Le Relais de Farrou (5 km away) offers refined Aveyronnaise cuisine in a bucolic setting. If you have time, continue to Najac (20 km, 25 min), a spectacular village perched on a rocky spur above the Aveyron, with its 13th century royal fortress. Combining Villefranche + Najac + Cordes-sur-Ciel in one day is possible with our hourly hire option.
