Muret is a town steeped in history, closely linked to two major events. On 12 September 1213, the Battle of Muret pitted the crusaders of Simon de Montfort against the troops of King Peter II of Aragon, who had come to defend the Occitan lords against the Albigensian Crusade. The defeat and death of the King of Aragon at Muret sealed Occitania's fate, joining it to the French crown. Seven centuries later, Muret saw the birth of Clement Ader (1841-1925), a visionary engineer who flew the first aeroplane in history — the Eole — on 9 October 1890, thirteen years before the Wright brothers (a passionate debate among historians). The Clement Ader Museum traces this pioneering adventure. Today Muret is the third-largest commune in Haute-Garonne with 27,000 inhabitants, a dynamic commercial hub on Toulouse's doorstep. The town retains a pleasant historic centre around the Saint-Jacques church (octagonal bell tower), the grain hall and the Garonne riverbanks, landscaped for walking. The Saturday morning market is one of the largest in Toulouse's southern suburbs, with around thirty local producers. Muret's position at the crossroads of the A64 (Pyrenees) and N124 (Gers) makes it a strategic starting point for the southwest.
