Millau is a town at the gateway to grandiose landscapes, world-famous for the Millau Viaduct, the tallest bridge in the world (343 m, taller than the Eiffel Tower). Designed by architect Norman Foster and engineer Michel Virlogeux, this engineering masterpiece inaugurated in 2004 spans the Tarn valley with dizzying elegance. But Millau existed long before the viaduct: the town has been a glove-making centre since the 12th century, with a tradition of exceptionally fine lambskin leather (Millau gloves adorned the hands of European courts). The Millau Museum traces this history. The town is also the gateway to the Tarn Gorges, a spectacular 50 km canyon between 500 m cliffs, navigable by canoe-kayak. To the south, the Roquefort caves (12 km) house the ageing of the 'king of cheeses', Roquefort AOC, in the natural scree of the Combalou. The Grands Causses (Larzac, Sauveterre, Noir, Mejean) frame Millau with their immense limestone plateaux, a paradise for hikers, paragliders and lovers of wide-open spaces. The gastronomy is Aveyronnaise: aligot, tripous, Roquefort, flaune, rye bread.
Route
Route Toulouse → Millau
From Toulouse, your driver takes the A68 to Albi, then the N88 towards Rodez for about 50 km, before turning southeast via the D999 and A75 towards Millau. Alternatively, the route can go via the A61 + A75 through Lodeve depending on traffic conditions. The landscape evolves spectacularly: from the Tarn wine hillsides, you pass to the high granite plateaux of the Segala, then to the limestone causses of the Aveyron. The Causse du Larzac, an immensity of stone and dry grasslands, stretches as far as the eye can see. The descent towards Millau is striking: the town appears at the bottom of the Tarn valley, with the viaduct spanning the horizon. Tolls include the A68 (approximately €7) and the Millau Viaduct (approximately €10 in summer, €8 in winter). The journey takes 1h55 under normal conditions. In summer, the viaduct attracts many visitors and traffic can slow at the observation areas.

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Millau route
The Millau Viaduct is impressive from below and above. The viaduct viewing area (dedicated motorway exit) offers a spectacular viewpoint — your driver can stop there. For a panoramic view, climb to the Levezou causse belvedere or the old Millau bridge. Visiting the Roquefort caves is essential: Societe (the largest), Papillon or Gabriel Coulet (more artisanal). The ageing in the natural Combalou fissures, at 11C and 95% humidity, is fascinating. The Tarn Gorges can be paddled by canoe-kayak from La Malene to Hauterives (one day) or by traditional boat (Les Bateliers des Gorges). Paragliding from the Larzac causse above Millau offers unbeatable views of the viaduct and gorges. The Millau market (Friday morning) offers Roquefort, lambskin leather gloves, causse lavender honey, rye bread. Le Bracieux restaurant, in a former townhouse, is the city's gastronomic address.
