Agen is the prefecture of Lot-et-Garonne, a characterful city on the banks of the Garonne between Toulouse and Bordeaux. Its worldwide fame comes from the Agen prune, a dried fruit from the Ente plum cultivated in the Lot and Garonne valleys since the 12th century — the monks of Clairac imported the plum tree from Syria during the Crusades. Today the Pruneau d'Agen IGP protects this emblematic product. But Agen offers much more: the Garonne canal bridge (539 m), built in 1839, is a spectacular engineering feat that carries the Canal lateral a la Garonne over the Garonne itself — a river bridging a river! The Fine Arts Museum holds a remarkable collection including the Venus du Mas d'Agenais (Greek marble Aphrodite) and works by Goya. Agen is also a passionate rugby town: the SU Agen, founded in 1900, is one of the historic clubs of French championship rugby. The old town, with its medieval lanes, arcaded squares and markets, breathes Gascon joie de vivre. The Boulevard de la Republique, the main avenue lined with plane trees, concentrates shops, cafes and lively terraces. The recently landscaped Garonne banks offer a pleasant walk facing the canal bridge.
Route
Route Toulouse → Agen
From Toulouse, your driver takes the northern ring road then the A62 motorway (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Bordeaux. The A62 follows the Garonne valley, the historic axis linking Mediterranean and Atlantic. You first cross the Grisolles plain (market gardens), then Montauban. After Montauban, the motorway enters Tarn-et-Garonne then Lot-et-Garonne — the valley widens and plum orchards appear, characteristic of the Agen landscape. In April-May, the white plum blossom is spectacular. You pass Castelsarrasin, Moissac (the abbey bell tower is visible), Valence-d'Agen. The Agen-centre exit leads directly to the Boulevard de la Republique. A62 tolls amount to approximately €10. The journey takes 1h15 under normal conditions. The A62 is well dimensioned and rarely congested, except on major departure weekends (July-August) with Bordeaux-Toulouse traffic.

Specific tips for the Toulouse → Agen route
In Agen, start with the canal bridge: this engineering marvel is free and accessible on foot — walk along the towpath above the Garonne, a unique sensation. The covered market on Boulevard de la Republique (Tuesday to Sunday) offers prunes (obviously), foie gras, goat cheeses, Marmandais tomatoes, Quercy melons. The Fine Arts Museum deserves 1h (Venus du Mas, Goya, Impressionist collection). For prunes, visit the Berino house or the Ferme du Prunier to understand traditional drying and taste prune cream. For dining, the Michelin-starred Mariottat restaurant is the flagship address. In October, the Prune Festival animates the town. Rugby fans should attend an SUA match at the Armandie stadium — the atmosphere is exceptional. The Canal de Garonne can be cycled: the canal cycle path links Agen to Moissac (40 km, flat and shaded).
