Obernai is one of the most charming towns on the Alsace Wine Route, nestled at the foot of the Vosges in the shadow of Mont Sainte-Odile. With its double medieval ramparts, Renaissance six-bucket well on the Market Square, flower-decked half-timbered houses and 13th-century belfry (Kapellturm), Obernai concentrates the essence of Alsatian heritage. The town is the birthplace of Saint Odile, patron saint of Alsace, whose monastery perched at 764 m on a rocky spur is the region's most visited pilgrimage site. Obernai's vineyards produce renowned grands crus, notably the Clos Sainte-Odile. The old town's caves and winstubs (Alsatian inns) offer tastings and traditional meals year-round. Taxis from Strasbourg are used by wine enthusiasts, Mont Sainte-Odile pilgrims and Wine Route tourists.
