Nemours, population 13,000, is a history-rich town at the confluence of the Loing river and canal, dominated by its 12th-century medieval castle (now a municipal museum). The town notably houses the Île-de-France Departmental Museum of Prehistory, one of France's most important prehistoric museums, set in a remarkable brutalist building by Roland Simounet (1981) within a 40-hectare wooded park studded with sandstone boulders. The Nemours rocks, satellites of the Fontainebleau massif, attract bouldering climbers from around the world. The town, crossed by the navigable Loing, offers a picturesque riverside setting with its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church (11th-16th c.) and restored washhouses. Transilien R serves Paris-Gare de Lyon in 1 hour, but the taxi is preferred by museum visitors and travelling professionals.
