Moret-sur-Loing is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the entire Ile-de-France region, celebrated for its 12th-century ramparts, its imposing keep, its fortified gates, and especially the stone bridge over the Loing that was immortalised by Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley, who lived here from 1889 until his death in 1899. The commune, which merged with Orvanne and Ecuelles in 2016 to form Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne, retains an exceptional charm with its half-timbered houses, cobblestoned lanes, and the picturesque confluence where the Loing meets the Seine. The sucre d'orge de Moret, a Benedictine barley sugar confection dating from 1638, holds the distinction of being the oldest sweet still manufactured in France. The town is also a starting point for scenic walks along the Canal du Loing and the GR13 long-distance trail. Residents of Moret turn to the taxi for Paris whenever the Transilien service from Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons station does not suit their needs, particularly for journeys involving luggage or evening departures after the trains have stopped running.
