Marnes-la-Coquette is an exceptional residential enclave of barely 1,700 inhabitants, tucked into the wooded hillsides of the Hauts-de-Seine department and widely regarded as one of the most exclusive addresses in the entire Paris region. The commune covers just 215 hectares, making it the smallest municipality in the department, yet its landscape is remarkably varied: to the north, the 600-hectare Fausses-Reposes national forest — a protected expanse of ancient oaks and chestnuts — rolls all the way to the outskirts of Versailles, while to the south the tranquil ponds of Ville-d'Avray reflect the same willow-fringed scenery that Camille Corot captured on canvas in the nineteenth century. Within the village itself, narrow lanes wind between high meuliere stone walls concealing sprawling estates with manicured gardens, and multi-storey buildings are essentially absent from the skyline. The Institut Pasteur operates a research facility on the commune's territory, continuing a scientific presence that dates back to Louis Pasteur's own visits to the area. Marnes-la-Coquette also gained widespread recognition as the home of French rock icon Johnny Hallyday, whose imposing property on the hillside became a place of pilgrimage for fans. Positioned eight kilometres from the Palace of Versailles and five kilometres from the Chateau de Malmaison, the commune sits within a corridor of outstanding French heritage. However, Marnes-la-Coquette has no railway station, no metro link and no tram service — a defining feature that makes private transport essential for any meaningful journey. The route to Orly Airport via the N118 and A6 is one of the shortest and most scenic airport connections in western Paris, descending through forests and leafy hillsides before joining the motorway south.
