Chelles, Seine-et-Marne's fourth-largest town with 54,000 residents, boasts an exceptionally rich historical heritage that stretches back to the Merovingian era. The Royal Abbey of Chelles, founded in the 7th century by Queen Bathilde (wife of Clovis II), was one of the most powerful monasteries in the Frankish kingdom. Charlemagne's own sister, Gisele, served as its abbess. Archaeological excavations on the abbey site have unearthed remarkable Merovingian treasures, many of which are now displayed at the Musee Alfred-Bonno. The town stretches along the banks of the Marne river, offering pleasant waterside walks between the old centre of Chelles and the recently landscaped riverbanks. Situated close to Marne-la-Vallee and Disneyland Paris, Chelles is an important node in the eastern inner ring of Ile-de-France. The Chelles-Gournay station, served by Transilien Line E (Line P), reaches Paris Gare de l'Est in about 20 minutes, but the taxi remains indispensable for rush-hour travel when trains are overcrowded, for late-night returns after the last service, for journeys with heavy luggage, and for Parisian destinations well away from Gare de l'Est such as Opera, the Champs-Elysees, or La Defense. The Vaires-Torcy Olympic water sports venue, which hosted rowing and canoe-kayak events during Paris 2024, is just 5 minutes from Chelles.
