Its château, state property since 1783 when Louis XVI bought it for his hunts, served as a country residence for French presidents from 1896 to 2009. Francis I died here in 1547, Napoleon spent his last night before exile here, and the G6 summit was held here in 1975 at the invitation of President Giscard d'Estaing. The national estate includes the château with its state apartments, the Queen's Dairy (a neoclassical gem built for Marie-Antoinette), the Seashell Cottage adorned with 100,000 shells, and a romantic English garden. The national sheepfold, founded by Louis XVI in 1786 to acclimatise Spanish Merino sheep, is a popular family visit. Rambouillet forest, with its 20,000 hectares of oak and pine, offers hiking trails, peaceful ponds and remarkable wildlife including free-roaming deer. The Espace Rambouillet allows visitors to observe large forest fauna in natural enclosures.
