Pierrefonds Castle is one of France's most extraordinary architectural creations. Built in the late 14th century by Louis of Orléans, brother of King Charles VI, it was dismantled on Louis XIII's orders in 1617 and lay in ruins for over two centuries. In 1857, Napoleon III entrusted Eugène Viollet-le-Duc with its restoration. The visionary architect transformed these romantic ruins into a fairy-tale castle, blending medieval archaeology and creative imagination. The result is a unique building evoking an idealised medieval castle, with eight imposing towers, ramparts, chapel and abundant sculptural decoration. The castle has served as a backdrop for numerous films and series, notably the BBC series 'Merlin'. The village of Pierrefonds, with its lake and forest, provides a charming setting to complement the visit. The village's location on the edge of Compiègne forest, away from major roads, makes a taxi particularly practical as public transport is virtually non-existent.
