Dourdan is a small town of 11,000 inhabitants nestled in the upper Orge valley, at the edge of its namesake state forest covering 1,600 hectares of centuries-old oak and beech trees. Its architectural jewel is the Château de Dourdan, a 13th-century royal fortress built by Philip Augustus in 1222, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Paris region. With its cylindrical towers, massive keep and water-filled moats, it now houses the municipal museum and hosts exhibitions and medieval events year-round. The 15th-century covered market hall, a listed monument, hosts the Saturday morning market — an uninterrupted tradition since the Middle Ages. The Flamboyant Gothic church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois features remarkable 16th-century stained glass. Dourdan is also a prime starting point for forest hikes along the GR 111 and GR 1 trails. Commuters use the RER C, but the line takes 65-80 minutes to central Paris, making taxis essential for urgent or late trips.
